compy Too Cool for Cyber? Don’t be Scurred‏So you use the internet for work, gaming and surfing porn but somehow online dating is still taboo to you. Why is this? Don’t you know that as time passes on and you become busier, more locked into a routine and more inflexible to change, the dating pool will shrink to a mere cup? With online dating you can have your cake and eat it too. Instead of forcing in time to troll the bars of TGIF and Bennigan’s looking for tipsy, happy hour single, you could easily login, scroll through some attractive profiles and try your hand at a connection.

Given the stigmas with online dating and the “uncool” factor that gets associated with it, many people (especially women) will express their uncomfortable feelings about trying things via the internet. We are adults, if appearing “cool” still matters to you, then nothing I say will help your plight anyway. The people who find online dating fun and helpful, normally use it as another outlet to gain dates and take it only as seriously as they are willing to. The men I know who do well in the online dating circle are typically young, professional and busy, one of these guys dropped this anecdote as we discussed the pros and cons of cyber romance:

You see a lot of people on online dating websites stating that they are going to “give this a try” or “I never thought I would be on here doing this”, and they are woefully uncomfortable with the entire process of online dating and it shows.  Very often these people will chuck the emailing and winking back and forth, and just put their phone number out there after the first email exchange.  They do this because they feel that email is too impersonal and the traditional way of meeting people and talking is what they know so they stick to it.  What they don’t realize is many people who put themselves out there online are doing it because they are busy, and do not have the time for the initial conversations with several people they would meet in a bar.  The most annoying thing for busy professionals is calling several people they just met to see which one they might be compatible with, exchanging communication over email online will allow them to do this without being tethered to a phone.  Then if they get a real vibe with one of the people they are emailing then they jump into the next stage, and ask the person to meet for Coffee and escalate things from there. – Mark

Maybe you’ve been playing a bit of an MMORPG like an Everquest 2 or World of Warcraft and have gotten close to that foxy healer who keeps you alive during raids. Now for you non-gamers this may freak you out so you may want to skip this paragraph, but anyway you and the healer hit it off. Your nightly chats and emotes has led to a little vent conversation and you find her voice to be as sexy as her avatar and she yours. Chances are you get overly excited and curious that you have found your soulmate while doing something you enjoy but there’s that thought in the back of your head that SHE is really a HE using a voice-changer and f-cking with your emotions. Chances are you guys have engaged in a little cyber sex with your avatars or married each other ingame or something to show your closeness. She heals only for you and you’re her knight in shining armor. Why not get a pic and move the convo out to emails, it’s healthy to have these urges and just because it’s a game does not mean that you can’t get a nice warm partner out of it.

So my point is this, who cares how you meet your partner, it’s all about what you make out of your relationship after. When we get caught up on impressions and the ones you impress are laughing at you and asking why you haven’t found someone yet. You have to realize that you are impressing people who do not hold your best interest in heart. Valentines Day is around the corner, spread the love my fellow Drakees, to quote Early Cuyler from Adult Swim “GIT YOU SOME!!”. We live in a cyber world, we work on the internet so whats wrong with finding love along the way?
