“There is always an option, quitting being one of them”
Jobs expect you to live check to check, they don’t expect you to be doing well with money. If you are doing well with money they know that if your work situation gets too hot, you have an easy way out. You aren’t lock into the job like everyone else and they cannot read you or keep you locked down and a menial salary. Actually when you are financially set with ambiguous income streams, your boss who knows this will be more likely to play ball when it comes to raises and promotions.
A dangerous employee is an employee with options. This is the case if your boss is the standard guy that is using you as a “necessary evil”. Most people play into his hands because they live check to check. They whine but make no moves towards bettering their position. You should always have options, whether it be a start-up that you own (which can be anything by the way) making dolls to sell on eBay or reselling watches, Jean pants, whatever. You should have some sort of extracarricular that you enjoy and let the job be the tool that pays for your living expenses.
If you aren’t of a enterprising mind-set then you could consider a small part-time job. The point of it all is that you need more money streams coming in than your job. You shouldn’t have to rely 100% on that job to live.
It’s all about options most people who want to quit can’t because people by nature are reactionary. A smart employee has his or her’s resume prepared and ready at any time. They don’t wait until the boss pisses them off for them to stay up all night compiling a crappy and rushed resume in hopes of getting out quick (sound familiar?).
Know your options
Is your position one that will take months on end to get hired should you be fired? Is your field in high enough demand to where you can get a job the next day or week even? See, you should know these things regardless of how happy you are in your current job. Cover your bases even if work is sugar amidst a bed of roses.
Remember knowledge equals peace of mind. You are only a slave to your job if you let yourself be. Have options, know your position and have a back up plan at all times. When you aren’t relying solely on the job to make money and you have extra coming in of your own design, then the job becomes a “job” and you will be on the same level of thinking as your boss.
