Well as you know diet is the supreme factor of bodybuilding and it is the difference between looking okay and looking in-shape. If a person works out alot and eats what they want, they will get some size and look pretty good but If a person diets right (ie: sticking to a plan), and workouts alot, they will turn heads. People who workout alot and are lax on the diet usually wonder how to look like the hard-body running through the mall wearing something nasty to show-off. Well the difference is that guy, as gay as he looks is probably dieting his ass off.
Abs are probably the most complex part of the formula, one cannot simply “get skinny” and have a rack of abs. Doing sit-ups alone won’t get you abs. Dieting alone won’t get you abs. Doing cardio alone won’t get you abs. Like I said it’s complex, there are 4 things that factor in for good abs:
- High protein/low fat diet
- Good Cardiovascular exercise
- An actual abdominal workout (not just a few sit-ups here and there)
- Last but not least, alot of sleep
Most athletes with awesome abs will tell you they sleep alot, that recovery is a bitch! People who fail to get 8+ hours a sleep daily will find it harder to get them than someone who does. This applies to all muscle groups also.
Editor’s Note: Just like calves, genetics are also a huge factor in having a six-pack versus a keg of beer down there. It’s not a viable excuse not to workout your abdominals but it may account for that lazy skinny kid you know who looks ripped through his dirty wife-beater.

Unfortunately I don’t get enough sleep. I need to work on that.

Most of us don’t, with my working habits over the last few years its been damn near impossible for me. But I found that the times when I can sleep in and make my own schedule, my physique benefited for it. Slept well, woke up looking like a beast etc., etc. We really should take sleeping more seriously if we plan to keep bodybuilding.
