rapey locker-room talk?

Though we tend to stay out of politics here at Hall of The Black Dragon, I found it prudent to address the brand new go-to excuse for predatory language–in regards to women–the now trending term of Locker-Room Talk. As someone that has played, fought, and bonded with other men in sports, martial arts, and lifting weights, it really annoys me that I am being generally lumped in with douchebags that think taking a kiss, or taking a grope is cool. Let’s be honest. Men of my age (GenX) have never been the pinnacle of Beta perfection that is pushed as ideal in this modern age. We objectify women unapologetically, we are crude, and we tend to be very stubborn about changing any of that. In a high school locker-room with other males, we tend to clown one another, when we weren’t clowning, or being clowned we talked about… [Read more]

In my humble opinion, nothing is a greater test of heart than sports and combat. You can train, study and read all you want but when the jaws of life slams shut, you are typically left with two choices: fight or run. Most of us assume that we will fight if the situation gets dire, but trust me, you never really know until you find yourself in danger. It is after reacting and recovering that you truly know what you’re made of. Some of you are warriors, rolling off of your opponent with his warm heart beating within your teeth, but some of you don’t have the stomach for it, and end up running away or falling victim.  The deciding factor isn’t as simple as winning or losing. You have to apply pressure to your spirit, and observe what it does in the worst situations. “You… [Read more]

While single men and married men can hang-out and do many things together, there are a few zones that are just awkward when you’re single. Like it or not there are two differing factions when it comes to your social life. There’s the Player’s Club for Singles and the Couple’s Getaway Club for Married folks. Awkward feelings tend to arise when a member of one of these Clubs tries to enter into the other without the proper credentials. Being that I have been the awkward single guy at many a Couple’s Getaway, I’ve compiled a list of events that you should probably avoid attending as a single man. Weddings (when you’re the last friend single)  If you have a great group of friends and you’re the last one left not married, attending that guy’s wedding will put a lot of attention on you. Prepare to have all the newly married… [Read more]

I’m always honored when someone wants to interview little ‘ol me about writing. It gives me a chance to speak about the act of writing itself, which like any other art, is a passion where the person behind the works is ignored–unless they become an Andy Weir. LuxeLifeATL.com is a lifestyle magazine in Atlanta that features much of the news, entertainment, and the arts & culture. If you plan to visit chocolate city anytime soon, you may want to check them out to see what’s going on. From the Interview: I grew up on Science Fiction shows and movies, and I have always read Sword and Sorcery. As I grew older however, I began to notice that Science Fiction had people who looked like me, whereas Sword and Sorcery didn’t. This naturally made me pay attention to Science Fiction more, and I fell in love… [Read more]

The word ‘Man’ comes with a variety of definitions from many different people who (respectfully) have their own means and agendas doesn’t it? Man is defined through the individual’s subjective opinion, influenced (and not lightly) by religion, society, race, prejudice and theories. This of course includes myself so let me start by saying that this is one man’s opinion. There is no universal codex on what a man is. There is however a code that a person can adapt and abide by for life–which makes him stand out as an extraordinary individual–therefore earning the label of “A Man”. This code is what being “a real man” is about. Not a specific type of man, but a certain type of man: a gangster and a gentleman all rolled into one. A man is defined by his actions. His honor above all else, and then there is… [Read more]

“A man can be an artist… in anything, food, whatever. It depends on how good he is at it. Creasy’s art is death. He’s about to paint his masterpiece.” – Rayburn, Man on Fire I did the post a few years ago back when a lot of killer movies were still coming out. Now that we’re all about super heroes and white-washed Egyptian gods, I thought that it would be a good idea to post it again … just kidding, my main motivation for bringing back the Top 10 is because I am reading Man on Fire by A.J. Quinnell. You know, I should do an updated list of the latest set of badasses that have shown up in movies … It’s funny how we can fear death yet applaud it’s dealers so heavily in movies, books and video games. Think about it, the crowd cheers in… [Read more]

There’s a lot to be said about hustling. You will find that a lot of “hustlers” brag on their ability to take a beating and “do what it takes,” but is that something to brag about? Their life is not really enviable, is it? It’s not enough to hustle, just like it’s not enough to be self-employed. – which people brag about quite a bit. Speaking from experience, a good number of people who brag about having their own thing are not doing as well as they would have you believe. Remember, entrepreneurship is a lonely journey. After several years of writing my own checks and grinding out 12 hour workdays, the idea of “being my own boss,” paled in comparison to the idea of “getting out.” I never bragged about my hustling but I know that a lot of people envied me for “setting my own… [Read more]

The other day I thought to myself, how do you know when someone is a friend? How do you differentiate between a friend and someone who finds you useful and convenient? This was a tough question and while many people have varying answers to it, I boiled mine down to scenarios. A friend will come to help you even when they lack the resources and means to. A fine example that I can refer to is my nightmarish moving days when I tried to do it solo and a random friend would pop up to help. While you may see this as trivial, you have to consider the full story. I had given out ample notice that I would need help moving at x date yet everyone who promised help couldn’t attend. I’ve had this happen three times in my life and all three times, three… [Read more]
