Gladys Knight & Ron Winans’ Chicken and Waffles
529 Peachtree Street NE | Atlanta, GA 30308
For years I’ve wanted to try the famous Gladys and Ron’s chicken and waffles in downtown Atlanta. I’ve heard so much about it and since it’s such a different mixture of tastes in one sitting, I felt like I had to have it. Well, today I finally had the chance to go, and I’m sad to say that it was a little bit of a let down in terms of what I was expecting. Granted, the food was very good in that my buckwheat waffle was very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the chicken wings were perfectly fried, but I just wanted more from it.
From the itty bitty parking lot, to the seating for two where the four of us were forced to sit, to the greasy spoon-esque bathroom (complete with a can of Lysol on the counter), I kept telling myself I was just being my usual food snobby self. However, it just continued to feel like an overrated Waffle House with inflated prices. The service was average, and they were out of at least 5 entrees on the menu which also turned me off.
My friend ordered the Uncle Ron’s which was 3 pieces of dark meat fried chicken with the choice of two sides. The mac and cheese was baked perfectly and the salmon croquettes had a crispy coating that was great. The corn bread was so fluffy, but with a crispy edge. Again, tasted good. Don’t get me wrong – all of the food really was really good. However, there was nothing extremely special about it except the pictures of all the celebrities that came through. I guess I went into it thinking that the food would be something other than what I could do myself in my own kitchen, but there was no special batter for the waffles, no special batter for the chicken wings, and the southern sweet tea tasted like some regular Lipton but with no refills.
I would recommend this place for tourist’s sake at the very least, but I don’t see myself craving it and needing to go whenever I am in the Atlanta area. I don’t know if it’s because I hyped it up too much in my mind or if it’s because I expected more from the legendary Gladys Knight, but my chicken and waffles experience was just that. Chicken and waffles.
