rapey locker-room talk?

Though we tend to stay out of politics here at Hall of The Black Dragon, I found it prudent to address the brand new go-to excuse for predatory language–in regards to women–the now trending term of Locker-Room Talk. As someone that has played, fought, and bonded with other men in sports, martial arts, and lifting weights, it really annoys me that I am being generally lumped in with douchebags that think taking a kiss, or taking a grope is cool. Let’s be honest. Men of my age (GenX) have never been the pinnacle of Beta perfection that is pushed as ideal in this modern age. We objectify women unapologetically, we are crude, and we tend to be very stubborn about changing any of that. In a high school locker-room with other males, we tend to clown one another, when we weren’t clowning, or being clowned we talked about… [Read more]

Since pretty much forever, there’s been all types of people. Some skinny, some fit, some with a little extra, some straight up fat. As the centuries have progressed, that last group has been increasing its numbers. Now that a lot of us sit in comfy chairs all day and eat our food from packages, it’s pretty easy to understand how there’s just more fat people around in general. Up until recently there’s really been no change in how fat people are viewed. So lets see, usually when you see some extra heavy person walking around, there’s certain things that go through the average mind. Some of those may be “lazy”, “lacks self control”, or even a simple “gross”. Hey guess what? those are valid thoughts. They’re not universally true of course, but they’re about as true as seeing a fit person and thinking “active”, “self… [Read more]

There’s a lot to be said about hustling. You will find that a lot of “hustlers” brag on their ability to take a beating and “do what it takes,” but is that something to brag about? Their life is not really enviable, is it? It’s not enough to hustle, just like it’s not enough to be self-employed. – which people brag about quite a bit. Speaking from experience, a good number of people who brag about having their own thing are not doing as well as they would have you believe. Remember, entrepreneurship is a lonely journey. After several years of writing my own checks and grinding out 12 hour workdays, the idea of “being my own boss,” paled in comparison to the idea of “getting out.” I never bragged about my hustling but I know that a lot of people envied me for “setting my own… [Read more]

Many of us have had ideas that we wanted to turn into reality. Most of us sit on it, tell everyone we know about it, and let it drift off into the clouds of “what-ifs”. We are satisfied that everyone either said it was a good idea, or give up after learning that it has already been invented. Then there are those strange folks who think of things, build them, and then fly overseas with little else but a dream in order to get a factory to manufacture it… Most of us don’t know too many people like this but guess what? I got to sit down with one of these crazy people in order to pick their brains on what it takes to bring an idea into reality. It was a late night when I visited Master Hoon Park’s dojo “J Park Martial Arts”… [Read more]

Author’s note: Recently I did an article for fellow author Mark Gardner’s website. He gave me carte blanche to write about anything and I chose to talk about diversity in books (primarily Science Fiction). Here’s an excerpt and link to the actual article: One of the biggest praises I get from men when it comes to my books is that I write men to be authentic of who we are. You would think that being a man would make this automatic, but I read a lot of books written by men where the male characters are stereotypes as opposed to what you would find in a real person. My portrayal of men comes from a long history as a relationship blogger. When you’ve been forced to dissect why your gender does certain things—and behave certain ways—for as long as I have, you will find that… [Read more]

People always say that its only when pet peeves and annoyance comes into play that you realize how much you are willing to put up with when it comes to dating. Once you know how much you are willing to put up with (and what you definitely are not) you tend to migrate towards and settle with someone who fits that mold. Then there’s that woman.  We all know who she is. The one who for whatever reason makes her issues the sole controller of her emotions when she meets someone and gets close to a real relationship.  It almost seems that she is more comfortable when she is getting screwed over, doesn’t it? I have known women in the past who have put up with a lot of wrongdoing and they truly didn’t deserve it.  Makes me think that nice girls really do finish last.  It’s like when… [Read more]

Idris Elba Street

Yesterday Twitter exploded when the chocolate flavor of the decade for women, Idris Elba, was brought up YET AGAIN in the same sentence as James Bond. This time it was via some poorly chosen words by a James Bond author, Anthony Horowitz, who used the word “street” to describe Elba. The outrage trended the entire day to the point where Horowitz had to issue the standard apology that comes with social media outrage (rolls eyes). You know, the same apology that everyone does, no one believes, yet we still want it just because… There was some good that came out of it though. Lots of Idris Elba’s admirers got to show off their favorite pics of the man in a suit. There’s no shortage of Idris looking cleaner than a bar of soap, so you can imagine the amount of photos that were tweeted during… [Read more]

Three men at a bachelor party

Having attended and partially hosted a number of bachelor parties, I have learned that it is very easy to get the groom burned instead of entertained and sent off into the magical world of marriage. Most of the problems that arise from this tradition is due to men behaving badly, and though most of it is avoidable, you will always have an idiot losing his mind and burning everyone in the process. Selfishness and a spotty memory comes with the alcohol that flows at a bachelor party, so it becomes really easy to forget why you’re there. The bachelor parties that end up being the most successful tend to be the ones where the groom’s true friends are there. Friends who want to make sure that whatever they do, the man is entertained and sent off properly. Disaster strikes when you have a married guy… [Read more]
