With the campaigning starting we are seeing the pandering beginning already. Seeing someone running that is outside the “norm” brings forth issues concerning “ism’s” again. With Obama, racism was brought up and questioned on its overt or subversive nature. And now with Clinton re-entering the fray questions of sexism and a glass ceiling are floating around. This is not an issue about candidates; this is simply about what is and what isn’t evident. Just as many people would stake claims that racism is over, they like to say that sexism is over as well. Sorry, but that just is not the case. Sexism, ideals regarding what men and women are capable of and should be able to do. Simone de Beavoir, author of The Second Sex (1949) is such a foundational piece in the women’s rights movement and feminism. “Representation of the world, like the… [Read more]

Men have been pounding on women in relationships since…well forever? We are physically bigger, stronger, and we are bred to fight–despite what the well-behaved men blogs will tell you. This makes us extremely scary. Not just to women, but to other men as well. Have you ever been to jail or seen an episode of Lockup? A savage with no self-control and/or a temper can be a nightmare to anyone around them, let alone a weaker person trapped inside a car or house with them. On the flip-side, a woman that knows how powerless a battered man feels in our society (where we are told that we are bigger, stronger, and bred to be warriors), and takes advantage of him by being the abuser is just as frightening to have as a family member. To make light of any of this is a well known… [Read more]

I like Longhorn Steakhouse… at least, I like the one we’ve frequented for lunch on many occasion, but I never thought that the restaurant would appeal to me on such a personal level! As we all know, black folks in America have had a long history of devouring in tandem, large portions of fried chicken and watermelon (being snarky here so don’t go calling the drop squad on me). It’s been a running joke since forever, but I bet you thought it died down with our modern, progressive, anti-racism climate and all. Not for a certain person making the menu though–who I imagine looks very much like Uncle Ruckus from Adult Swim’s The Boondocks. Longhorn seems to be attempting to slip in just one more coon joke on us, and only those with a long memory (or a sick sense of humor like yours truly) would catch it! Take a… [Read more]

What could possibly add on to the perceived “thug culture” of one of the last hyper-masculine sports in the United States? Not much, being that the casual and non-sport fans of the NFL already have the perception that the NFL is comprised of players who are: Uneducated (look at the early reactions to Richard Sherman last season) Criminal (the handful of players who have crossed the law are used to represent the whole) Rapists (Big Ben) Thugs (another term for a scary black person) Over-churched (Reggie White) Racist (Richie Incognito and Riley Cooper) (TBA) The TBA will become “homophobic” by the time we’re into the next season and it will not enhance or destroy the opinion that people have of the NFL already but it will make for a whole lot of news. Right now with Michael Sam announcing that he is gay to the… [Read more]

It saddens me that after a defensive struggle of epic proportions to decide the winner of the NFC Championship, the only thing the internet had to say was ambiguously racist attacks against Richard Sherman. Don’t worry, this article isn’t about him. What happened on Sunday was two teams—with exciting, young quarterbacks—played their hearts out to have a chance at taking on Peyton “MJ of Football” Manning in the big dance. And what a game it was! Thinking back on the many chances that San Francisco had to take it home (I’m a fan, sorry) the only picture that comes to mind is FOX replaying the disgusting leg injury of NaVorro Bowman about 100 times. Gore fans (not Frank Gore fans but the blood drinkers) and horror whores were probably masturbating themselves into a frenzy as they got super slow motioned, every angle shots of the… [Read more]

“Hot damn hoe, here we go again.” – MC Lyte When Jay-Z learned that Cristal Wine didn’t have black people in their best interests, he quickly dropped them and let it be known publically that he no longer supported them. Now that Barneys New York is under investigation, his silence suddenly makes him labeled as the biggest coon in the world to Black America.  Why do people think that because Jay-Z is black and ridiculously rich, that he will turn into Jesse Jackson overnight? Go ahead and mull that over while I sit here shaking my head. For years upon years Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter has given us the raw facts about who he is. We all know who Jay-Z is; he is a hustler, survivor, and one of the luckiest men on earth with a great portfolio, successful wife and a beautiful baby daughter. Jay-Z has never… [Read more]

I once had a friend of mine (white person) ask me if it would bother me if they showed up to a party in some brown paint to complete their ensemble for a black character they loved and wanted to be for Halloween. I asked them why couldn’t they just be the character without the offensive, extra detail. That was the end of the conversation. I think now of how I would portray a character like Tony Stark the Iron Man, one of the main Marvel Super Heroes that I loved and adored as a kid. I would get my mustache right, grow a junior ‘fro and then carry around a glass of liquor while wearing a glowing arc-reactor under my shirt. No time during my imagination of myself as Stark do I picture myself in the mirror with some makeup, going white to complete… [Read more]

YES! Do you find that you like a particular set of men and women for their race before anything else that we would consider important? Think about it, we all have friends or family members that openly admit to only dating (insert race) girls, or (insert race) guys. These beloved members of our fellowship do not see anything wrong with their desire but for anyone hearing them and observing the pattern it is looked upon as a major problem. Members of minority groups who participate in this are given derogatory names, the man or woman that may have dated back to back members of another race are accused for having a “fetish”, wanting to be that other race and a number of other basic accusations. People get defensive, they say in one breath that they are all for “loving who you love” but then say… [Read more]
