Janelle Monáe, Girl from Another Planet

Open your minds, earthlings, and prepare to be launched headfirst into an alternate universe. A place where robots fall in love with humans. Where your tour guide into this alternate realm is a demure lil thang with a bold set of pipes. “I’m an alien from outer space,” declares Janelle Monáe on the first song of her debut album, Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition). Yes, Toto, we are no longer in Kansas anymore. Or even planet Earth. – Taken from

As you all know, the Hall of The Black Dragon is all about originality, sexiness and space-aged things. So how surprised was I to be flipping through the channels and there on BET (yes the stereotypical abortion of a music channel) and seeing a small woman in saddle shoes doing a wicked moon walk in a futuristic setting.  Checking to make sure I wasn’t on VH1 or another station, I watched the video in shock and then ran to the internet to watch it again. Janelle Monáe is an artist that has been around for a bit albeit in the background but it seems that her debut will be dropping soon.

So I urge you Dragons to check her out at to preview other songs besides Many Moons. The girl is the truth with large vocal ranges and a sound that takes you into the space-age similar to the way Deltron and Dan the Automater did with the legendary album Deltron 3030. Please check this out, support unique American music and send a message to the radio controllers that more of this and less of that is good.

You may wonder why I am going on and on about this, but from my posts in the past about the decline of originality in the modern age (especially American originality) and my reaching out to the UK and Canada for music… well you would understand that when a good artist pops up next door, I will do my damnedest to support and help promote his/her music. First there was Gnarls Barkley and now we have the Alpha Platinum 9000, Janelle Monáe.
