Gym Alternatives To Beat The New Year Rush

It’s that time of year folks, you know THAT time when getting on a machine in the gym is an impossibility due to the new crowd of people trying to accomplish their “New Year’s resolution”. Chances are you may have forgotten about this fad during your routine weekly gym visits; the holidays made you cheery (and forgetful) and the warning signs (Jennifer Hudson ads) were not showing up on your television station of choice. Regardless of your expectations however the crowd is here and now your typical 45 minutes of chest on Mondays has been shifted to 1.5 hours due to having to wait on the new members cramming in badly executed exercises on every machine. January through March is the peak time for gyms to pull in new memberships; it’s a personal trainer’s dream and a gym rat’s nightmare. Nothing can fix this problem unless you can make Christmas, Thanksgiving and sugary, fatty foods… [Read more]

Sending A Straight Man Flowers? Just Say No!

The day I received flowers I went through a mix of emotions that bordered on “what the f—“. It was confusing, like maybe they were delivered to the wrong person, then I was flattered, and then I wondered how pissed off she would be if I gave them to the company admin (she likes flowers) or if I simply threw them away. Flowers clipped and gifted are doomed for death anyway right? Plus it’s the thought that counts; she wanted me to know that she was thinking about me and I got the message loud and clear – so what if I take that awkward gift and left it in the break room by the dumpster? The above situation is descriptive of a thought process that goes through many men’s minds when their new girlfriend, lover or crush decides to flip the traditional gender switch and send them flowers. It’s not that it is emasculating… [Read more]

Fighting Emotional Contagion in 2012

Among the many new years resolution we all make, the typical ones include  weight-loss, exercise, beginning a new project, saving more… you name it. Somehow many of us have never include ways to improve our mental health. Mental Health? What the hell are you talking about Dr. Carly? Well… did you know that 1 out of every 4 persons living in the U.S. has some type of mental health disorder? They run the gamut from mild to severe, but that is not what I really want to call your attention to. Did you realize that both good and bad moods are infectious?  Yes! The fact is our mood and emotions are easily affected by others; especially those we are closest to.  Think back, have you ever been in a great mood and then met up with your honey/parent/friend/co-worker who was in a major funk? All of a sudden, your good mood deflates like a punctured… [Read more]

Is She Your Woman or Your Shadow?

Guys (and gals), when you have a lover, girlfriend, wife, friend etc. you should always introduce them to people unless you are either embarrassed by them or asked to keep their identity a secret beforehand. When you run into friends and family without introducing the person that is with you it leaves room for a ton of speculation about him/her that you won’t like. Before I get into this I must preface by saying that I know with many people it isn’t intended as a sign of disrespect or slight when they don’t introduce their mate to you. Sometimes we assume that the mate will introduce themselves or that you have already met the individual at one time or another. This article is just a reminder to everyone that assumptions is bred from perception and when you have someone silently standing next to you as we talk I liken it to the way you treat… [Read more]

Are You Counting Down A Celebrity Turning 18?

One of the most interesting things that men admit to in life and on the internet is counting down the years and months until a girl celebrity becomes a woman. Sure at times it comes off as a joke but when a friend tells me Chloe Moretz looked “hot” in Kick Ass, I mentally add him to a list of “dudes who would never be left alone with a daughter of mine”. Chances are you have noticed these statements too (trust me) and you’ve either participated in them or scoffed and kept it moving without addressing how truly creepy it is. I am not calling these men pedophiles, we’ve all been tricked into staring at jailbait at one time or another, but there’s just something off about the whole culture of age watching. As a man who prefers my mangos ripe, soft and sweet as opposed to green and hard, I am completely confused by… [Read more]

BnE Review: Gladys & Rons Chicken and Waffles

Gladys Knight & Ron Winans’ Chicken and Waffles gladysandron.net 529 Peachtree Street NE | Atlanta, GA 30308 404-874-9393 For years I’ve wanted to try the famous Gladys and Ron’s chicken and waffles in downtown Atlanta. I’ve heard so much about it and since it’s such a different mixture of tastes in one sitting, I felt like I had to have it. Well, today I finally had the chance to go,  and I’m sad to say that it was a little bit of a let down in terms of what I was expecting. Granted, the food was very good in that my buckwheat waffle was very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the chicken wings were perfectly fried, but I just wanted more from it. From the itty bitty parking lot, to the seating for two where the four of us were forced to sit, to the greasy spoon-esque bathroom (complete with a can… [Read more]

A Better Outlook On Marriage & People’s Advice

Now that I have experienced what it is to have a “failed marriage”, I often wonder why I am still hopeful about getting married again, and making it work. With the high rates of divorce and broken relationships, heightened by the recent debacle of Kim Kardashian, it is so easy to become cynical about “I dos”. Everybody has a personal rule as to what assures success or sure failure in marriage. I have heard advice ranging from “live with the person for at lest year, as in a trial run”, to the other side that says “If you shack up, your marriage is guaranteed to fail”.  There are also those who counsel – “Make sure you get to “know” the person. Date for at least one to three years”; yet I have a friend who got married two weeks meeting her husband, and in June of 2012 will celebrate their 40th anniversary. In twisted reference,… [Read more]

John Rambo – The One Man Army

When I think of the tale of Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo, it’s funny that I only think of the original First Blood and the last movie that was simply called Rambo. As a fan of the movies, I never took the time to read the book but from what I hear his tale was meant to end after First Blood. Just a tragic tale about a war hero come home, harassed by some redneck cops and forced into a situation where he had to use his tools of war on people that he had fought and almost died for. This was the movie however, in the book the dynamic of Rambo was much different as he was suffering from PTSD and was arrested for vagrancy which landed him in jail and made him have flashbacks that led to many policemen dying by his hands. We are not talking about the book Rambo however (let me clear… [Read more]
