Editor’s Note: It seems like every time I go on a mommy website these days there are tips for scheduling your day, weekly menus, to daycare or not to daycare, or managing your adult life with your children. While these are all great tips, I never see anything about help for dealing with all of those decisions when they take a toll on your sanity to a point of self-medication. We all have a hard day now and then, and some of us just want to decompress on the couch when the kids go to sleep. But there are others, quite a few I might add, who put them to bed and say the cliché “I need a drink”. AND they mean it whole-heartedly. This is a telltale sign of the parent struggling with keeping it together while raising little people who watch their every… [Read more]

There have been plenty of times in the last few years when I’ve seen the family members of friends getting over on them in one way or another. Some family members use their loved ones to get loans (that they don’t intend on ever repaying), to get free room and board, and to get limitless help–when life knocks them down. While it’s noble to offer help without want of payment to a family member, we all know that there are some people who will cross the line and take it to another level beyond charity. Let’s talk about bad friends and family members, and why we cannot treat everyone the same based on relationship ties. To the users and abusers, life isn’t about one hand washes the other, it’s about squeezing. If you have it to give, they have the hands to take, and they… [Read more]

By now, you have gotten your fill of the public stoning of Baltimore Ravens, once, star running back Ray Rice. He is the newest media hamburger: stacked, grilled, beefy, and ready to feed any writer that needs an article—like yours truly on this Monday night. Rice is facing charges (legally and otherwise) for jabbing his wife in the face, in a Las Vegas elevator. This happened back in February, but recently, he was put on blast, by a leaked TMZ video. Meanwhile, in bigger news, we have more be-headings going on, police publicly executing black boys in the street, and a disease outbreak that will make the oh-so-coveted Zombie Apocalypse look like the flu. However, the NFL is back in season, the players make more money in a year, than we will ever see in a lifetime, so we all focus on them. It is… [Read more]

Men have been pounding on women in relationships since…well forever? We are physically bigger, stronger, and we are bred to fight–despite what the well-behaved men blogs will tell you. This makes us extremely scary. Not just to women, but to other men as well. Have you ever been to jail or seen an episode of Lockup? A savage with no self-control and/or a temper can be a nightmare to anyone around them, let alone a weaker person trapped inside a car or house with them. On the flip-side, a woman that knows how powerless a battered man feels in our society (where we are told that we are bigger, stronger, and bred to be warriors), and takes advantage of him by being the abuser is just as frightening to have as a family member. To make light of any of this is a well known… [Read more]

While studies may suggest a link between selfie-taking and mental illness, my experience has been anything but detrimental to my mental health. I would hazard to guess that many people who experience PTSD find selfie-taking a healing, rather than damaging activity. When growing up, I was discouraged from looking in the mirror and, as a result, was not able to identify with myself in ways that most children took for granted. I did not have pictures of birthday parties or other happy moments to refer back to. These kinds of pictures were simply not available to me. As a result, I grew up lacking a key foundational element in my development… | Read the rest at Toilet Paper People |

I am often asked the question about what I would do if I won the lottery. Of course my answer is that I would give the large majority of it to The Toilet Paper People Foundation, a foundation created to serve child abuse victims in an attempt to give them new and creative futures outside of their abusive pasts. “Um, well once the damage is done to a kid, it’s kinda done isn’t it? Kids have plenty of opportunities that animals don’t.”Some well-intentioned people will ask me more questions of this nature until I have to wonder if it would have been more p.c. of me to have suggested I give the money to the Humane Society. In many cases question askers of this variety will go on in an attempt to discredit the already disenfranchised, “I mean, humans have more of an opportunity to… [Read more]
