BnE Review: Gladys & Rons Chicken and Waffles

Gladys Knight & Ron Winans’ Chicken and Waffles gladysandron.net 529 Peachtree Street NE | Atlanta, GA 30308 404-874-9393 For years I’ve wanted to try the famous Gladys and Ron’s chicken and waffles in downtown Atlanta. I’ve heard so much about it and since it’s such a different mixture of tastes in one sitting, I felt like I had to have it. Well, today I finally had the chance to go,  and I’m sad to say that it was a little bit of a let down in terms of what I was expecting. Granted, the food was very good in that my buckwheat waffle was very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the chicken wings were perfectly fried, but I just wanted more from it. From the itty bitty parking lot, to the seating for two where the four of us were forced to sit, to the greasy spoon-esque bathroom (complete with a can… [Read more]

Never Order Food Before She Arrives

It was a saturday afternoon when I went to go meet a cute chick in town for our 2nd date after chasing her down for a week (she had it going on so I was intent on closing the deal). On my way to the spot I called her and received no answer, I thought “okay, I just spoke with her 20 minutes ago so obviously she’s in her car, I’ll text her when I get there”. Arriving at the place some 15 minutes later, I was 5 minutes early for our date so I sat, chilled for a bit and got some water. 15 minutes later after texting her and getting no response, I figured that I was stood up so I chalked it up to the game, waited another 10 minutes and then ordered lunch. Not 3 minutes after ordering my lunch, in walks this bird looking happy as a pig in slop…… [Read more]

The Pleasure of Good Food in Good Company

If you are a cultured individual, one of the best things that you can do for your not-so-privileged friends is to show them the beauty that is the art of eating. Many people grow up eating just to satiate their hunger and attain a small pleasure but never get the chance to really eat. I believe that social eating is one of the most intimate and special luxuries that we have as human beings. It is the reason why families in the old days made it a mandatory thing to eat breakfast and dinner together, but being forced to the table is a world of difference from being invited to the table. I have become a huge fan of the 3-course meal even though I pass on dessert. I start with the house soup, some finger foods and an adult beverage followed by the delicious main course (modest helping thank you), then top it off… [Read more]

4 Signs That She Enjoyed The First Date

I like to think of this as a part II to the previous First Date Signs That She Will Want To See You Again. I realize that all women are different and may not follow the few examples I provided, so I decided to offer additional ways to tell she’s interested in the days after the first date. 1. She keeps in touch in a timely fashion We all know there’s the age old “wait a few days before you call” rule that people sometimes use after that first date, so you first must understand that there is a fine line between an uninterested woman and a woman not wanting to seem desperate. The way you will know is in her timeliness of returned communication. You call and she returns it within 24 hrs. You text and she responds soon enough for it to be a conversation. If she is feeling you she will be… [Read more]

The Dragon’s Diet Tips For Your New Year’s Resolution

If getting fit and losing weight is your new year’s resolution for 2011, let me assist you with a few steps that’ll help make it painless and rewarding for you. Give away the left-overs That’s right, the eggnog, the Oogie Boogie cookies and grandma’s spice cake needs to be out of your refrigerator before you start trying to diet. If you leave the bad food in there you will feel obligated to “not let it go to waste” and you will eat it and cheat when you run out of food. Spare yourself the temptation by giving it away to kids or your 90lb cousin Mary. Don’t get a trainer unless you can afford him/her for the year Please don’t get a trainer using the little bit of money you got as a gift for Christmas. If you are going to get a trainer, please get a serious one and stick to the game plan… [Read more]

F is for Fat – Is That Politically Correct?

Recently I was enjoying some good old school reggae, when I heard Maxi Priest burst onto the air waves with the rhythmic “Hey Fatty, Fatty”.  I was always under the assumption that unlike the U.S., many African and Caribbean nations held fat women as desirable icons of beauty.  I paused to really listen to the words, only to realize Maxi Priest was actually berating her for being fat. He belts out– “Hey Fatty Fatty, why are you behaving like that (go long so)? When you come to the party/club (dance) you do your own thing! You move your hips like they are on a hinge. You do the “round-the-world”, you do the “electric move”, you do the “water-pumping”, and you say you want to “bubble” with me. You walk down the road as if you are slim, because you don’t know that in town you are the biggest thing.” As a young woman in the… [Read more]

BnE Review: Origami Sushi

Origami Sushi 3647 W Hillsborough Ave Tampa, FL 33614 origamisushitampa.com This small restaurant presents just the right mixture of authentic Japanese cuisine and American style dining.  There is ample seating along the windows and dining room, and a full bar with flat screen televisions that runs across the length of the dining room. Great for a date night, or just being out with friends or family, Origami is a great place to frequent.  The staff is friendly, the bar is stocked, and the food is worth the wait. I love the menu at Origami as it has pictures of every dish they serve, so there is no guess work in what your food will look like or what ingredients will be included. I ordered the “Scorched Earth”, a cooked roll with salmon and asparagus.  The kicker is the assortment of fish and seafood in a spicy mayonnaise on top, flame cooked sort of like how… [Read more]

Jamaican Jerk Turkey Thigh Recipe

With trying to keep with the theme of quick meals for the brothers and sisters (cant forget the sisters out there) that find cooking a challenge, either because they are intimidated by the kitchen or they feel they just don’t have enough time, I’ve decided to share another quick recipe that I think is bursting with taste and flavor.  This is a recipe I decided to try one day because I wanted some jerk chicken but I only had turkey thighs in the freezer. So I figured, why not jerk some turkey. I’ve had jerk snapper, lobster, pork (back in my days of eating pork), and chicken. I recommend to everyone that if you really want some good jerk, head to Boston Bay Beach, Jamaica. It’s the jerk capital of the world. They have a jerk festival every year around the 4th of July. Anyway, back to the jerk turkey thigh recipe. It’s really easy… [Read more]
