Shocking… I know. It seems to be a common theme in this country – someone dies recklessly by a gun, people get upset, blame is issued and the discussion downgrades into another tired argument about gun control. Much of these arguments are a lot about nothing, you have a few scared people who own firearms not wanting them to be taken away and you have another set of people who think that without guns senseless violence would not occur. Intelligent people see it for what it is: opportunistic politicians back guns because a certain type loves them; other opportunistic politicians call for gun control because they know that another type hates them. On its surface intramural sports for grown men seems like the perfect opportunity to get in shape, bond with a couple guys and praise the gods with the spirit of competition. Well it may be these things if you play in a league of friends who all know and respect one another but for the standard leagues that you will join it is not. My experience with intramural sports having done it for both basketball and football is that there are 3 types of people who come out to play against you. The first is the dad who wants an excuse to run around in hopes of losing his beer gut, the second is the ex-athlete that misses the game and the third (who ruins It for every one) is the never-was, the once-was or the wannabe. One of my biggest arguments for team sports is the normalizing of the Superhero prospect. What do I mean by that? Well when you haven’t played team sports and your only experience with teams stem from either video games or what you see from a distance – your brain tends to romanticize the ability to go beast. See in video games when you are playing sports or even military skirmishes, you have power-ups that can be timed and used to allow one member of the team to single-handedly bring it back. When you play a team sport and you try to individualize the loss and turn on beast mode, you find that it isn’t something that you can call up at will. Those of us that have played or participated in anything competitive know that when all else failed and everyone else bailed there was one person who saw things through to the end: mom. When we were outmatched or outplayed, mom (sometimes embarrassingly) watched on. Maybe it was because she was our ride home (child endangerment charges could be a bitch, I’d guess) or just figured “Hell, I’m here now. No need leaving early.” Either way, she stayed. I remember one year playing on a team that just scoring was victory for us. We were a pathetic cluster of boys imitating a football team at times. During those games, I’d look to the stands hoping that she had been looking away and not seen the last few minutes. Hell, I felt bad for her.
