The word ‘Man’ comes with a variety of definitions from many different people who (respectfully) have their own means and agendas doesn’t it? Man is defined through the individual’s subjective opinion, influenced (and not lightly) by religion, society, race, prejudice and theories. This of course includes myself so let me start by saying that this is one man’s opinion. There is no universal codex on what a man is. There is however a code that a person can adapt and abide by for life–which makes him stand out as an extraordinary individual–therefore earning the label of “A Man”. This code is what being “a real man” is about. Not a specific type of man, but a certain type of man: a gangster and a gentleman all rolled into one. A man is defined by his actions. His honor above all else, and then there is… [Read more]

Many people like the character of Richard Harrow played by Jack Huston on HBO’s hit show Boardwalk Empire. While we may admire Richard Harrow as a professional and a marksman, the true reason behind his likability seems to be somewhat of a mystery to folks that fell in love with him. What he had that many of the characters in Boardwalk Empire, and in many shows like it, is humanity. In this one man we get a complex mix of loyalty, respect, good and evil. Richard, to me, was similar to a warrior’s sword back in the feudal times. When warriors acquired their family sword, it was a treasured heirloom that was a representation of their ancestors along with being a deadly weapon that could protect them in times of danger. When you received it, it was in good shape because the warrior sword was… [Read more]

If you are a modern gentleman, one of the things that you will stay on top of is your personal appearance and this extends from looks to your living environment. Mess and clutter has been a stereotype of men that goes back a long ways; it reasons that men’s carefree attitude towards life leads us to becoming slobs in need of a woman to help us clean up. Knowing more than a few women that are slobs along with men that keep their pad together, this stereotype is false but many people do struggle with keeping their homes in order. What can you do? Well the number one thing to keep in mind when taking on the discipline of cleaning up, is that it is always better to do things “right now” rather than “later on”. When you wake up, spread your bed “right now”…. [Read more]

One thing that we men love to do with our sons is to deck them out in the coolest gear that is somewhat reflective of the values we aim to place on them later. You’ve all seen it before, the little gentleman in his hat and matching vest with baby oxfords on, or the baby in all matching gear holding on to dad for dear life. It’s absolutely cool to have a mini-me that can match or complement you when you’re out and about isn’t it? I’ve always wondered at what age does  a father or mother start to influence the dress code on junior. From general observation it seems to be around the time he starts to walk. But what if the influence could start earlier – like from the time he is able to drool? Well Couture For Kids is a company that… [Read more]

Did you ever think that luxury hangers would be something that you would need in your closet? If you answered no to this I will let you know right now that your game may not be where it needs to be. Let me explain. One thing that men tend to neglect above anything else in their dress and day-to-day habits is the attention to detail when it comes to life’s trifles. A sophisticated gentleman is noticed not because of the expensive suit he is wearing—granted he does get some looks for it—but the accessories and his attention to the little trifles are what put him over. As men we look at things like shoes, socks, belts, watches and cufflinks as fluff items that are hidden away by our clothes, so we say “why bother to spend money and time getting the best when nobody will… [Read more]

It’s no big secret that cufflinks are one of the classiest accessories a man can have (just ask Don Draper).  They add understated panache to a dress shirt and have the transformative powers to make any average Joe feel like Mr. 007 himself.  The problem that many men experience is that, being that cufflinks is not a piece we incorporate into our everyday attire, we don’t know the first thing about this accessory.  If this describes you (you know who you are) this guide will take you by the hand and show you all of the various types of cufflinks that will help you to dress like a man of distinction. The Big Wide World of Cufflinks Regardless of the type of cufflink you choose, know that the shirt you are accessorizing must have a French cuff. What is that exactly? It means that the… [Read more]

“Hey Greg, love your site – I’ve been a regular reader for some time and I sometimes come across these titles for men that are used here. Lately I’ve been trying to see which one I would fall under if any of them apply. I am married, love to cook and help my wife do chores around the house, I also keep a garden and do yard work. I am serious about living clean and smelling good, but I also like NFL, MMA, Spike TV and general guy stuff. I’ve been called a metrosexual from friends before but I wanted to hear it from the master of labels before I own it. What kind of man am I?” – Alan Hey Alan, it sounds to me like you’re the safe, “good guy” that many women claim they want but rarely ever get due to their attraction to the jerky boys…. [Read more]
