We have been programmed to think that flowers are for girls

The day I received flowers I went through a mix of emotions that bordered on “what the f—“. It was confusing, like maybe they were delivered to the wrong person, then I was flattered, and then I wondered how pissed off she would be if I gave them to the company admin (she likes flowers) or if I simply threw them away. Flowers clipped and gifted are doomed for death anyway right? Plus it’s the thought that counts; she wanted me to know that she was thinking about me and I got the message loud and clear – so what if I take that awkward gift and left it in the break room by the dumpster? The above situation is descriptive of a thought process that goes through many men’s minds when their new girlfriend, lover or crush decides to flip the traditional gender switch and send them flowers. It’s not that it is emasculating… [Read more]

Expensive weddings could mean trouble for the future

Why spend a mint on a huge wedding only to lead a life of hard grinding, a debt ceiling that is as tall as a cathedral and an unhappy wife/husband bitching about money? Now as your friend and/or family member we have to hear you complain about your financial situation and how hard it is to keep up… yet you have a double income coming in. Why didn’t you think of this before showing up everyone with your 6-figure wedding bash? How is it impressing people if they already know that you’re about to spend 10+ years in the trenches struggling and putting strain on your marriage by working a way out of the hole that you’ve put yourself in? Recently I went to the wedding of a good friend of mine and it was small, intimate and very cost-effective. The couple love and understand one another to the point that they worked hard to… [Read more]

There is a right and a wrong way to show gratitude

I’ll never forget the day in High School after some big to-do about Martin Luther King (it was February, Black History Month) when I was in line for my lunch being stared at by a blonde haired girl who looked like she wanted to cry. Without warning this girl started asking me what I wanted for lunch and loading my tray up with items that I could have gotten myself, making me feel weird and uncomfortable along with the confusion that flooded my mind. I didn’t know this girl but I thought about it later (after politely telling her to leave me alone and putting back the items) and I realized that I was her chosen charity case due to the white guilt that comes along with tales of slavery, Jim Crow laws and lynching. Now I am not a veteran nor have I served in the United States Military but I can imagine that… [Read more]

I guess Don Santana has to wet his beak - at your expense.

I hate Christmas, well hate is a powerful word but I hate what Christmas does to people. For someone that hates pretentious ideals and things, seeing a holiday where people purposefully make themselves go broke is beyond depressing. It’s like a drug that we are all forced to take. DRINK THE EGGNOG BITCH! DRINK IT! December rolls in, people’s lights go up in decorations that spike their light bills, bills are forsaken in lieu of buying gifts for loved ones and for 30 days we pretend as if it’s all love. Harry Connick Jr. is singing his ass off on the radio right after the late great Nat King Cole. Carols are being played all over the place and the temperature drops. Some people take it as an opportunity to celebrate family and make their way “home” as hardcore as possible to see mom and dad. Capitalists leech off of people’s ignorance, purchasing 100 Nintendo… [Read more]

I hate Valentine's Day - I will eat your heart!

I hate Valentine’s Day, and if you aren’t female and in a relationship then chances are you hate it too. Unfortunately I must preface this article with a disclaimer that I have a “Valentine”, so while I hate to disappoint those who see me as a lonely troll in some basement being bitter – you will find that most articles lamenting Valentine’s Day are from guys who actively have to participate in it. That being said, I don’t hate the Hallmark created money-sink day for the typical reasons guys hate it. I hate it because of what we have to deal with from other people on the day, it’s a hassle, it’s annoying and it’s damn expensive! Here are 10 reasons why I could do without Valentine’s Day, and for most of you out there that are single or otherwise, I am sure you will agree: 1.) Facebook Love Spam: I see my girl weekly,… [Read more]

Which one of the five love languages is yours?

Have you ever had the experience where you expressed your love in some form and it was not received as such? Perhaps it was this past Christmas where you could literally see the shoulders of your honey just drop when he or she opened the gift you thought was just perfect! Well, believe it or not, people speak different love languages, and our love tank can be filled or emptied based on how we communicate with our lover’s emotional language. When the love tank is empty, we tend to feel used and unloved. So according to Gary Chapman, these are five love languages we use to fill our emotional tanks. #1: Words of Affirmation Compliments, words of encouragement, and requests rather than demands all affirm the self-worth of your lover. They create intimacy, heal wounds, and bring out the full potential of your other half. #2: Quality Time Spending quality time together through sharing, listening,… [Read more]

Father and son bond over a game of Chess

I have to say that I have a special place in my heart for all the fathers I see randomly on the street who are actually spending quality time with their kids.  Too many fathers are always placing the blame on something/someone other than themselves as to why they are not “able” to be the type of father they want to be to their kids.  If you find yourself in a situation where you are not able to spend the type of time you would like to with your kids, such as living in a different city/state, there are definitely alternative ways to fill the void in their lives that is felt with your absence.  Men need to stop making excuses for their lack of parenting and start thinking outside the box in order to let that child know, more importantly feel, that they are loved. Let me preface this by saying that if you… [Read more]

Valentine's Day surprise

Valentine’s Day is coming boys, and you must be prepared if you do not want to be the butt of your girlfriend’s jokes when she is talking to her friends. Even if she loves you forever, and always appreciates you and your efforts, unfortunately it is the time of the year to take the time to prove how much you love her back.  In the process, you must keep in mind to impress her friends as well, as it is inevitable that their reactions will matter to your girl.  Here are a few tips to make sure you stay in the “perfect boyfriend” category. 1. Money Isn’t Everything. I’ve told you once before and I think it’s time to reiterate.  Women are the most impressed when it is apparent that you have been thinking of them.  For instance, boyfriend 1 has no idea what to get his girl but he knows she likes chocolate.  He… [Read more]
