“I sexed more with conversation than I ever did with my penis or my tongue.” – Iceberg Slim If you’ve read any of Robert Beck’s books you will understand why his genius and mastery of words reflect a complex creature that could not be summed up simply as a pimp. His words had a way of putting you in the moment, lulling you into his reality of wire hanger whippings, luxurious hotel rooms, and the drugs of the time that kept him so aloof that he earned the street moniker Iceberg. Pimping is a cruel, evil institution that has been strangely glamorized in Hollywood and music alike, but to say that the mythical pimp (not the real kind) does not hold a certain appeal to damaged young men is to be dishonest or dare I say ignorant to the culture. What is it about a pimp that… [Read more]

From blaming Video Games for gun violence to blaming rappers for rape, it never ceases to amaze me how the fad of generalizing becomes so popular when it never fixes the problem at hand. Do you know what I find funny about the current assault on Hip Hop with labels such as “rape culture” (since Misogyny is no longer the popular word of the day)? I find it funny that while the implications are serious, the people making the most noise do not buy, have never bought, and will never buy the albums of the rappers that they are going in on. Look at it this way, it comes off as if they are skipping over everything else wrong with radio hip hop in order to find the few instances of alleged rape. Bear with me here rape is a brutally terrible crime but what… [Read more]

Recently I ran into world class photographer and artist extraordinaire Bayete Ross Smith and we began to talk about Hip Hop, the culture, the music, and whether or not the movement was dead. My argument was that the Hip Hop we cherished since childhood was on it’s deathbed and that we need tor accept that as fact. Bayete disagreed on the death sentence of Hip Hop, reminding me that it was so much more than popular music and personal preferences. He explained it so eloquently I had to share it: If Hip Hop is something you are, you’ll find it thriving. You just can’t expect to get it through mainstream media outlets very much. Connect with the M.C.s, DJs, Graffiti writers/visual artists, B-Boys/physical performers and other creative innovators locally. I find Hip Hop wherever I go. But you have to seek it out. Counter Culture… [Read more]

Nobody likes to hear about their favorite artists dying but it worsens when that artist is young and full of potential. Amy Winehouse was a songstress who transcended many of her peers by channeling the greats with her powerful voice. She was in tuned with hip hop, not an elitist who shunned it – one of her songs “fuckery” was even dedicated to Nas, that’s how down she was and she did a collaberation remix of “I’m no Good” with Hall favorite Ghostface Killah. I say all that to show how much she embodied my two favorite musical genres of rap and jazz, she was my soundtrack and I was one of her fans who was hoping she could kick her demons and deliver a 3rd album. Today’s loss is another reminder to all of you out there who think that you are smarter and… [Read more]

Hip Hop fans and natives to Queens New York know who the legendary Pappy Mason is. He isn’t Italian, he isn’t Cuban and he’s not a creature of myth. While his reality these days is that of a poop slinging, 24hr lockdown lunatic serving a life sentence with no possibility of parole, Pappy Mason was one of the most dangerous gangsters to have ever held the streets of New York. The legend that is Pappy Mason is that of an enforcer and muscle who studied the doctrines (a whole lot of Scarface and The Godfather reruns), hated cops with a passion and never broke omerta. He was a crime boss’s wet dream because of his loyalty and he served his boss Lorenzo “Fat Cat” Nichols with Samurai loyalty. Pappy Mason was successful for one single solitary reason, he was respected out of fear. His volatile… [Read more]

Many of us have defended Kanye West’s sporadic actions for various reasons. We’ve put it on him being an emotional artist, we’ve put it on his mother’s death, we’ve put it on the right of a celebrity to be a diva. But if there’s one thing that I cannot stomach it’s when men fight over a woman that no longer “belongs” to them. Granted Mr. West does the same cycle yearly of random asshole shit followed by an amazing album that makes us rethink our annoyance with him but enough is enough. As a Kanye apologist I’m beginning to look like a fool. Crime: Fighting over an Ex Kanye is guilty of being a child that is badly in need of some deep therapy and a good old fashioned ass whipping. Come on people we all know his track record but the recent story of… [Read more]

If there’s one thing I can say about hip-hop it’s that fashion is so fluid that in the span of five years one person dressing a certain way versus another would almost contrast in style. This is why in this top 10 list we chose rappers that have transcended the fads and always look like a million bucks whenever you see them. While most tend to look like idiots when they try to dress up like the Italian gangsters from movies that they love so much, some guys have a fashion sense and look the part whenever you see them. This list was compiled based on the degree of clean and also the amount of times these men have had a bad day. You will find that the top three or so always look good whenever you see them while the ones towards the end… [Read more]
