Being A Nerd Doesn’t Guarantee You Success

Despite what movies and books depict, you are not guaranteed to do better than the cool people in your High School just because you were a social reject. The one part of being the social reject that people tend to ignore in movies (and in life) is that the social reject that becomes the baller has a few necessary components to achieve success. Being intelligent is great but do you have drive with that intelligence? Do you finish what you start? Are you the type to stay up nights obsessing over your business plan, your invention, and your future money maker? Many of you don’t but you assume that being the outcast in high school has afforded you the privilege of attending the class reunion in 10 years to laugh at all the hecklers who are now clerks at the local mall or mopping floors for the hospital that you own. While this may sound… [Read more]

What Mature Adults Play Video Games?

If opinions are like assholes then this one needs about 2 rolls of toilet paper, a colonoscopy and a  manual on personal hygiene. In this day and age if you eject this insult at a potential mate as if you expect to get confirmation, chances are you will be labeled a douchebag and dumped promptly. Many of you reading have this opinion and I will not turn this into a “let me play my video games in peace” article, instead I am going to break down why this argument won’t win you any favors from both men and women. Gaming is no longer a genre, it’s a medium We have television, computers, video games , smart phones and multimedia devices. On my Playstation 3 I am either watching a Blu-Ray movie, Netflix, the NFL package or playing Assassin’s Creed (for now). For people who assert that I am a childish bottom feeder, I have… [Read more]

Lewis Skolnick – The Original Alpha Nerd

Alpha nerds exist, they are either awesome or irritating depending on which table you’re eating at. To fellow nerds, the alpha is the one who “gets all the girls”, the brave one, the leader… you know that guy. To other people on the outside he’s the dorkiest, loudest, most annoying sonuvabitch in the place and you really wish you could punch him or lock him away. In Revenge of The Nerds (1984), Robert Carradine plays one of the greatest Alpha nerds in Lewis Skolnick. Lewis was a social reject but he was not shy, quiet or reserved, quite the opposite. Lewis was outgoing, engaging and had an annoyingly loud but memorable laugh and he dressed in his own style which he believed was cool. This is what put Lewis over and made him great, his ego and self-image went beyond all of the name-calling, jeers and taunts. Lewis 100% believed he was the shit, so… [Read more]

Let’s Support Charlie’s Angels 2011

If you’re a man that loves women and you have a pulse, you need to go ahead and set your calendar for September 22nd. Why? Well it’s when all sorts of hawte will be on ABC shooting up the screen and fogging up your glasses. No this isn’t a bait and switch but being that it’s ABC we had better show up en masse to make sure that this show stays on the air or it won’t see 5 episodes, trust me! What show? Charlie’s Angels, thats what show – this time a little less 70′s era Lily white with the inclusion of the beautiful Annie Ilonzeh as Kate. That’s if you like sweet milk chocolate, for the boys craving some bright-haired Aussie sunshine you can check out Rachael Taylor as Abby Sampson (she played the hot blonde nerd on Transformers 2), and for the rest of you that don’t fear Derek Jeter’s killer swing,… [Read more]

Is Sword and Sorcery Meant For Non-White People?

Why do I love Sword and Sorcery? It’s a question I have mulled over inside my mind for some time as an adult. I am a black man yet I have read every single one of Terry Brooks’ Sword of Shannara series (over 12 books), I am a huge fan of The Lord of The Rings books, and I grew up reading The Savage Sword of Conan The Barbarian as a child. In my teenage years I was the token black kid rolling a 20-sided die on the table top of a Dungeons and Dragons adventure, even playing DM to a set of adventures in the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons realm. Sword and Sorcery is fun, it depicts larger than life heroes overcoming the harshest of odds. In the table-top games you made up your own identity and lived through your character whether it be dodging fireballs, rescuing damsels in distress or cutting down creatures…. [Read more]

How the Internet inspires me

A million years ago I was a nerdy kid programming QBasic games on my Packard Bell 286 and learning more and more about bulletin board systems. I was hooked on BBS after the muscular running back of my football team introduced me to them (go figure, you think nerds are skinny and weak huh). Anyway I was on people’s boards playing text based games, chatting it up with like-minded nerds and keeping it to myself so not to draw the blank stares and confused looks that most people would give me at this BBS thing. The last one I visited was prior to college and after I logged off I went to lead a 4 year span of clubs, women, Hip Hop and scholarship. 3 years later this internet thing blew up and websites were all the rage as information became accessible at the tip of our fingers. While my buds used the library’s computer… [Read more]

Foggy Lenses: A Sexual Guide for Super Nerds

In this article I will be making reference to nerds, in fact the word count on nerd will be astronomical after I have finished saying what it is I have to say. That being said I wanted to preface this with a distinction, I am not referring to fake nerds (Olivia Munn), wannabe nerds (since nerds are all popular now), or geeks (sports stat guy and computer fix-it guy). I am referring to introverts, people who look down when they walk, wear high-water pants and hate/fear people. The guys who stare blankly at you because they haven’t had enough people experience to know that doing so is considered rude. The guys who are so full of themselves on a topic that they see everyone else as complete idiots. THAT is the nerd of which I will be referencing today. Examples of this Nerd of which I will be referencing is: Rodney from StarGate Atlantis, Kaylee… [Read more]
