I think it was on Enterprise (the newest in the long line of Star Trek series) that first brought this phenomenon to light for me. T’Pol, a super intelligent and advanced Vulcan female became sub-Commander on the ship despite the racial tension with her human crewmen. The most tension she had came from her Captain Archer who had a deep prejudice with her people after they robbed his father of the honor of space exploration. T’Pol and Archer were always at it but as the show went on their rivalry turned into mutual respect and then shifted towards some hardcore sexual tension. This week the awful game Duke Nukem Forever came out and was lambasted by game review sites all over the internet. Many of us have defended Kanye West’s sporadic actions for various reasons. We’ve put it on him being an emotional artist, we’ve put it on his mother’s death, we’ve put it on the right of a celebrity to be a diva. The poisonous Internet tough guys on message boards would make you take that shirt off really fast (wait nice thought there) but I’m sure the nice guy at Best Buy who took time out of his World of Warcraft discussion with his co-worker to tell you why a PC is better than a Mac may make you put it back on. So what defines a nerd? I find myself wondering about this because as human beings we all are complex in our own little ways.
