So what defines a nerd to you? I find myself wondering about this because as human beings we are all defined in our own unique, little ways. When asked this question most definitions lead to the stereotypical “nerd” (see movie Revenge of The Nerds) which is a socially inept, awkward, outcast who isn’t necessarily intelligent but highly fanatical about a certain thing. I have known many people who fit that mold; they seem nice enough but appear timid in social circles. They can rifle off stats about a football team or the entire Final Fantasy cast since the original. I’m sure you know people like this too. Some would argue that the introverted ways of most intelligent “nerds” are what buys them the label. If you have a person who is really into something to where it borders on obsession, they may or may not be… [Read more]
Today’s bytes involve the topics of privilege, discrimination and whether or not black folks were happy before civil rights (lol). There is also a unique perspective offered up about marriage by a female writer that we had to include and it will blow your mind to smithereens. This week we’ve been on a fitness tangent so there are some good links to training advice by step queen Cathe Friedrich. Lastly a coach goes off on his players and Lady Dragon Lisa Ann does some stretches.
YES! Do you find that you like a particular set of men and women for their race before anything else that we would consider important? Think about it, we all have friends or family members that openly admit to only dating (insert race) girls, or (insert race) guys. These beloved members of our fellowship do not see anything wrong with their desire but for anyone hearing them and observing the pattern it is looked upon as a major problem. Members of minority groups who participate in this are given derogatory names, the man or woman that may have dated back to back members of another race are accused for having a “fetish”, wanting to be that other race and a number of other basic accusations. People get defensive, they say in one breath that they are all for “loving who you love” but then say… [Read more]
Do you have a hairy chest? Well someone has a problem with it; bare chest – well someone else has a problem with it. I get confused with the opinions that I see in articles, interviews and random comments where a man’s chest is concerned and it makes me wonder why everyone has something to say about a man’s chest hair. I recently read an article online where the author was making a case for men being objectified (yup you read that correctly), and the signs to look for to determine whether a man was being made into a piece of meat, or a human being. The conclusion he came up with was in whether or not the man’s chest is shaved. The point was that bodybuilders, models, and workout enthusiasts tend to shave and are normally the ones being shown in magazines for their… [Read more]
Recently I saw a Pepsi commercial with the lovely Sofia Vergara and it managed to turn me off of a woman who is naturally irresistible. How, you may ask? Well it wasn’t her obsession with wanting a can of soda so bad, but the fool of a man who put himself out there and thought her needy mannerisms were intended for him. I’m sure the women watching found it funny and the men were too busy watching Sofia’s lips… but it was a reminder of what every man fears when going for beautiful women. It was the intent of the commercial after-all no doubt written by a man who knows how much it sucks but I am going to use it as a teaching moment for everyone. If you haven’t seen the ad, here it is: Mistake #1 – Turning Around After The Diss I think a man… [Read more]
As men we have the unfortunate curse of having extremely fragile egos where women are concerned. We don’t want to hear that we were settled on, lucky to have her, or even worse the current member in a long list of clones that occupied your woman’s “type”. So to keep your sanity I warn you men reading to probe ever so lightly where an ex is concerned because you may not like what you will find out. Is Stalking A Lover’s Ex A Manly Trait? Lots of women do this thing where they go digging in your archives to look up women of the past with whom you were in love with at one point. The goal of this behavior starts out as mere curiosity but quickly descends into this obsession to find out who she was, why she was prettier, and how in love you were with her…. [Read more]
Can somebody please explain to me why America is so obsessed with Lindsay Lohan? I could understand if she was a gifted, super-talented necessity to cinema that happened to fall by the wayside but from where I’m standing she’s just another child star who turned out rotten. A very cliché result of Hollywood parenting Why does this woman get 24/7 media coverage from gossip sites like TMZ? If Lindsay misses her probation we hear about it, if she’s found drunk we hear about it, if Lindsay has another garbage project—there have been quite a few—people act as if it’s her return to glory. What in the world is going on? Look I know the media has it’s favorite targets to saturate the world with — like Kim Kardashian, but with Lohan there seems to be this odd adoption of her by the consumers that confuses… [Read more]
While I love all sorts of hair on women (bobs, lengthy, short, curly straight… whatever) I have a special place in my heart for a nice fro, or some variation of. Chalk it up to me watching way too much Black Dynamite on Sundays or my weird obsession with blaxpoitation films, but the image of Salli Richardson in that pink pantsuit just makes me go crazy and believe it or not it all starts with the hair. Black women have a thing about natural hair which is a bit too serious for me to even comment on with terms like “the big chop” and whole blogs dedicated to ex perm fanatics deciding to cut all of their hair off – but what it leads to is a bevy of styles that sometimes results in a nice compliment to a beautiful smile, a pretty face, and… [Read more]
