stressed out single mother with baby

Editor’s Note: It seems like every time I go on a mommy website these days there are tips for scheduling your day, weekly menus, to daycare or not to daycare, or managing your adult life with your children. While these are all great tips, I never see anything about help for dealing with all of those decisions when they take a toll on your sanity to a point of self-medication. We all have a hard day now and then, and some of us just want to decompress on the couch when the kids go to sleep. But there are others, quite a few I might add, who put them to bed and say the cliché “I need a drink”. AND they mean it whole-heartedly. This is a telltale sign of the parent struggling with keeping it together while raising little people who watch their every… [Read more]

We all know that girl who has a kid or kids and who has not owned up to the sacrifice that comes with putting someone else’s life before hers.  She is the one who is still living her life the same as it was prior to her becoming pregnant. This girl gives off a “babysitter” feel and not a “child rearing” feel. Consequences of the child’s future do not enter her mind, usually because she was either never taught to care for a child (only to “watch” the child) and never had a positive role model on how to do so. I want to give advice to this woman. Not because I look down on her, but because I think she needs to wake up in order to reap the many rewards of motherhood.  If you are a woman who leaves your kid with your mother on… [Read more]

I feel like I’ve been seeing articles and blogs all over the place talking about people that are living their lives childless. As if it’s some kind of condition. As I was making my coffee this morning I heard a journalist leading into a story on this topic and asked the question, “Have Americans really become so selfish that ‘having it all…’ means having no kids?” Really? I was instantly transported back to when I worked with sixth grade girls and we were having a discussion about what it means to be a woman and one of the students turned to me and asked, “Don’t you wanna be a woman, miss?” Confused since I was hovering right around the ripe old age of 30, had a full time job, my own car, apartment and a had received at least two college degrees, I asked her… [Read more]

“Spurglar: a woman who steals sperm to ‘accidentally’ fall pregnant”. Thank you Cosmopolitan for coming up with a new word to define this act. Sure the number of women that are seeking education and careers are getting higher (very thankful to be in that category) and yes when this happens the age that women AND men become parents also has a tendency to also be higher. But does this mean that women should be stealing sperm to get pregnant? Being a single parent definitely isn’t a new concept nor is it an impossible task but should this be the aim that men or women should be seeking? This article was limited to women that had stolen sperm but men can be just as guilty of this too. In my single days, I went on a date with a guy that I met on an online… [Read more]

What if Single Parent Girlfriend Doesn’t Want Any More Kids? The subject of having children with single moms is a touchy one but a conversation that should be brought up early on.Believe it or not the situation that the title alludes to is a common one that comes about with people who decide to be unselfish (SNARK!) and date someone that has a child. Normally you fall in love with this person, decide that it is worth it to give the step-whatever a try and before you know it you love and accept their child as your own. Hell sometimes it’s reversed; kids can be so damn adorable. In any event like many things that should be discussed in the early phases of a relationship, we tend to neglect the need to brooch the subject of the future. With the future there may be a… [Read more]

Have we become a culture of “First World Problems”, or is it mistaken intent when we take each other to task over strong opinions? There seems to be a generational gap in hustle that I am seeing mostly in the younger men of our time. We can write for days on cause and effect but at the end of the day we need to figure out if there is a solution; a real solution to men losing their way. The age of the hustle is waning and more and more young men have resolved to being listless, drawling Omega Men with no ambition or aspirations towards the future. Oftentimes there is a family member or friend of these boys who comes to men like me and ask that we reach out and help the boys to “become motivated” or “get a job”. Let me be… [Read more]

I have but one question… why are you there? Recently in my life I have been lucky with being in the presence of many young people who are the product of single-parent homes. Having come from that myself I recall the day I swore that I would not be one of these men who neglect the child(ren) of the woman who happens to be my mate. You would think that men would accept that a woman with child is a package for love but this is not the case at all. Many men will get deep into relationships with women only to neglect the child, hate the child, abuse, molest, and any number of things that will blow your mind. Why even get in the relationship if loving a child that isn’t of your blood is beyond you as a human being? A few years… [Read more]

Talking To Your Child About What Happened… Whether you were with your child’s mother/father for long enough for the kid to remember, or if it was something your kid never experienced, the day will always come where they want to know what happened between the two of you.  Let’s face it, more often than not, the subject leaves a bad taste in the mouth of the one who was left, disrespected, found the other in bed with someone else, etc.  Unfortunately, it’s hard to get over the issues due to the fact that you are never truly free of that person and are constantly reminded of them in the eyes, nose, or voice of the little person you both created.  When the time comes keep these pieces of advice in mind, as they will help to ensure that what happened does nothing to change the… [Read more]
